Rufford Ford: Safety or Convenience?

Examining the decisions, the risks, and the duty to protect our community.

Predictable. Preventable.

It didn't take long.

The crowds quickly returned; egging drivers on to take unnecessary risks, all for some extra views on their channels.

But this time around, it wasn't only the ford. The drivers had new challenges to negotiate - a series of speed humps.

Installed by the council, these new additions didn't calm traffic, they tested driver skill and mettle, and added to the social media spectacle and the danger.

And then, one bright late Sunday afternoon, the inevitable happened.

Rising to the challenge, a show-off in an SUV, powered towards the last hump and the ford, then lost control.

In the blink of an eye, the vehicle careered headlong into the crowds lining the ford.

Spectators scattered, but it was too late.

Sirens, headlines, grief.

And the coroner’s words were damning: "Predictable. Preventable."

Does this lie in store for Rufford Ford?

This tragedy hasn’t happened — yet. But the risks are well known.

When the police requested closure, Rufford Ford was recognised as a location where risk was foreseeable, unacceptable and avoidable. The Police, Fire & Rescue Service, and Rufford Parish Council all supported permanent closure because they saw what could happen if behaviour and conditions remained unchecked.

The Council’s own highways specialists, after a lengthy and detailed appraisal, concluded that only two options would remove the danger entirely: full closure or a bridge. Every other “engineering fix” — kerbs, cushions, cameras — was judged ineffective.

Yet today, those same dismissed measures are being revived. Not because the risk has disappeared, but because a few voices said closure was inconvenient.

Public authorities have a clear duty: to put safety before convenience, to make common sense decisions based on evidence, and to spend tax payers money wisely.
